School Counseling Research Lab

The School Counseling Research Lab seeks to explore the complexities in school counseling programs and advance the professionalization of counselors. It is a collaborative endeavor with colleagues around the country. In addition to research projects, we provide support and consultation to school districts and educational organizations.

Sample Projects
Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction
Evaluated the value of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program (CSCP) implementation as required by SSB 5030 (2021) in relation to statute-driven program changes and educator experience. Contribute evidence for advocacy to inform policy and funding changes at the district and state levels to support ensuring that counseling resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to meet student needs.
Boston Public Schools
Examined how BPS school counseling could be improved upon to ensure equitable access to academic, postsecondary and social-emotional support, regardless of high school attended. Facilitated a series of working groups aimed at developing system-level recommendations & action steps to scale up existing effective practices and identify improvements to current programs and roles.
Research on School Counseling Policy
With little research on school counseling policy, we documented school policies across the United States and collected qualitative data drawn from interviews with 30 state leaders. Research revealed notable variation in policy and a lack of regulation, thereby leaving access to counseling programs up to chance.
Research on School Counseling during COVID 19
We completed a national survey of school counselors amidst a global pandemic and remote schooling. Findings from this project have been published in AERA Open, The Review of Higher Education, and Professional School Counseling. In each, we reveal how pre-existing work conditions were exacerbated by COVID-19 school closures and the shift to online learning.
